What they do in the short run is probably not too important. A new "axis" has declared itself -- and even if it backs down now, the beginning has been made toward an independent Europe. And an independent Europe relates to the U.S. as Germany related to England a century ago: an imperial rival.

Now in addition to oil giving out or the oceans boiling, there is another time limit on the usefulness of socialist revolution -- an exchange of nuclear weapons between Europe and the U.S.

Or some other scenario that we couldn't possibly imagine now. :-)
