Major Layoffs so far in 2003

The job market is pretty weak, but be careful about making too much 
of these layoff announcements. They're motivated in large part by the 
companies' attempts to impress Wall Street that they're cutting 
costs. It's not clear whether they'll actually happen. The 
headhunting firm Challenger, Gray, & Christmas collects them and puts 
out a monthly count, and I haven't been able to find any correlation 
between them and the national employment numbers.
