that top 1% poll

An alleged Time mag poll that found 39% of the U.S. public imagining
itself in the top 1% of the income distribution came up here
recently. David Brooks and Chris Caldwell of the Weekly Standard have
both cited it in articles. Turns out the truth is a little less
stunning. The actual question reads: "Do you think you will be in
that top group that will benefit from Bush's proposed tax cut right
away?" That's a long way from "are you in the top 1%?" Makes a better
story that way, though. Results: 19% will benefit right away, and 20%
in the future. It's in the Nov 6 2000 issue of Time.
