how was WJB a crank? (Gary Wills has a fun argument that in the Scopes trial, WJB was right and that other guy -- I'm blanking on his name -- was wrong.)

Didn't Milton Friedman say the Pops were right about gold? That wouldn't make them right, but it would seem to remove the 'beyond the pale' designation.

Note, however, that one of the most famous opponents of the gold standard (back in the day in which it was a live issue) was William Jennings Bryan, so it is possible to be a crank and not favour a gold standard.
