I think you're making him out to be more of a class enemy than is the
case, Doug.  He discussed his antecedents and particularly his father's
career ("diplomat" is a bit grand) in a couple of interesting articles in
the LRB, unfortunately not online: "A Belated Encounter" [0 July 1998],
and "...Chinese Maritime Customs" [20 August 1998].  --CGE
