US cultural sway waning

What are "Soviet-type variety programs" like?  What were "variety 
programs" like in the Soviet days?  I have never had an opportunity 
to watch any of either.

Pugacheva, Pugacheva and more Pugacheva. Alla Pugacheva and her family, aka
the "star family," her husband Philip Kirkorov (20 years younger than she
is) and daughter Kristina Orbakaite. Pop singers. They're on practically
every night (it used to be joked that Brezhnev would be known as the leader
he lived during the time of Pugacheva). Plus comedy bits. Maxim Galkin, he
does incredible impersonations of Putin, Yeltsin and Brezhnev, is a big
draw. Lots of comedy skits, children performing, things like that.
