BTW, absolutely the best summary I've read on this debate was something I found recently in a most unlikely place: the New York Times Magazine. It came out last August. I only put it aside because the author is the sister of a friend of mine. But spurred a few weeks ago by another mutual friend who'd read it, I was stunned. The first few paragraphs seem like normal wishy-wash, but then it gets sharp, and gets sharper and sharper as it goes along. I think it's not only the best long summary article on the subject but the best short book. Tina doesn't have Stiglitz's math genius but she's a much better writer. For all its length, it's extremely concise.

I'd post it, but it's 8000 words, meaning 46K, way over the posting limit. It's in the NYT archives, but because it's old you have to pay for it. But I'd be glad to email it to anyone who's interested.

Michael
