Christian, he was put in jail for his political activity. Like many other Italians during that period, he was framed...In his case accused of being the "master mind" behing the Red Brigades....which was "proven" on shaky evidence, "a phone call" So, he wasn't put in jail for calling himself a communist, he was put in jail for being a communist in a powerful way. He played no part in the violence of the Red Brigades and was not a member of the Red Brigades, but that was the excuse the police gave for arresting him.

If by Communists, you mean the Partito Communista Italiano, then he CERTAINLY DID NOT ASSOCIATE WITH THEM...remember the "historic compromise"!!!!!!The PCI was in collaboration with the Christian Democrats at the time in cracking down not just on members of the Red Brigades and Prima linea, but against all of the extra-parliamentary Left.
