Yes, indeed there is this commodification; however it was interesting the paraphrase that Doug threw out by Zizek, I believe (or was it someone else)) that bodybuilding, aerobics preceded a rightward turn politically.

I think that there is something to that statement...there seems to be some kind of ascetic, self-denial on a portion of the Left. Sure, some people are really poor and can only afford to go to work and come home and crash. But even for those on the Left (or a portion on the Left) who can afford the time and cost of an exercise regimen, it-exercise- is somehow frowned upon as frivolous and bourgeois. Is this an "anti-fashion statement" fashion statement? Probably. Is there something progressive about self-denial? No, but I sense that is how some on the Left (at least in America) look at it.

Anyway, I enjoy it and it makes me feel good. And yes, it makes me look good (or at least I think so :), which in turn increases my sexual activity. I'm not ascetic!!!

I would like to know that as well. I have never noticed that the ISO members were, on the whole, particularly beautiful. I have noticed that a great number of the Sparts look like they just got out of electro-shock therapy: the eyes of Pasolini's Jesus in "The Gospel According to St. Matthew", the hair of "Bride of Frankenstein", and the spaced-out demeanor of a newly arrived alien from the Pleiades.

Beam me up comrade....
