On closer inspection these articles are actually pointing to a problem of the poor quality of National Health Service food:

Pam Miller, chairman of the Hospital Caterers Association, said: "Poor hospital food is often cited as the cause of malnutrition amongst hospital patients."

To deflect attention from their own failings the NHS has manufactured an epidemic of malnutrition that simply is not there (something it is a past master at). Not surprisingly the evidence is that life expectancy continues to rise, and that under-nourishment diseases like rickets are negligible.
