I found this very sad. Stereolab was one of the best bands of the 90s even though they got zero radio play. Emperor Tomato Ketchup is one of the albums I'd bring to a desert island even though all their albums are good. They were accused of mixing Marxist lyrics with beautiful melodies, but I think they're more than that. Anyway, here's an Independent obituary for a unique person and character:

And for those fans in New York:

Missing Miss Modular by A Stereolab Listening Party in Loving Memory of Mary Hansen TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 2003 @ REMOTE LOUNGE

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Mary Hansen, who was a member of the influential and groundbreaking band Stereolab, was tragically killed on Monday December 9, 2002 in a bicycling accident while riding through central London. Hansen, who was 36, joined Stereolab in 1992. Hansen's signature "La La La" back up vocals and guitar work was an integral part of the band's unique sound. Funeral services were held in her native Maryborough Australia.

Stereolab has recorded eight studio albums since the retro-pop group formed in 1990. "Sound-Dust" (Elektra, 2001) debuted at No. 11 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. Stereolab's latest release titled "ABC Music: The Radio 1 Sessions" was released in October. It's a collection of British radio sessions spanning the years 1991 - 2001. It is an essential collection for newcomers and old fans alike.

As requested by the family of Mary Hansen, a portion of the admission for 'Missing Miss Modular' will be donated in her name to CanTeen. CanTeen, The Australian Organization for Young People Living with Cancer, is a national support organization for young people (aged 12-24) living with cancer; this includes Patients, Siblings, and Offspring. Young cancer patients created CanTeen and young people living with cancer guide its policies. The touchstone of CanTeen is the belief that young people, through meeting and talking with one another, are better able to cope with the uncertainties of a cancer diagnosis.

"Missing Miss Modular" is Tuesday, February 4th, 2003 At Remote Lounge (327 Bowery Above 2nd St, New York City) From 6 P.M. - 10 P.M. Admission Is $10.00. For More Information, email sfuller at granddivagroup.com or visit, http://www.granddivagroup.com
