Great column.  But has there ever been a people as tractable and eager to be 
misled as Americans?  As another keen US observer, Alexei Sayle, once noted: 

  "Americans have different ways of saying things; they say 'elevator,' we 
say 'lift'; they say 'President,' we say 'stupid psychopathic git.'"
