Bentham does not "resolve" the contradiction. He squshes it. Incidentally, Henry James comes close to making Marx's cultural point in the Preface to the New York Edition of _The American_. In that novel a French aristocratic family rejects the marriage of their daughter to a "vulgar" rich American. In the Preface (written several decades later) James says, it would never have been like that. The French "aristocrat" would have glummed on to the money without an instant's hesitation.
