One of the things that struck me when i did political work in the early 90s was how easy it was for a few super-high energy, sometimes fanatical, people to dominate and direct so-called "coalitions," and thus create a "smoke and mirrors" impression of their strength. Most of these folks did have jobs, family, et al., but many now suffer from serious health problems (e.g., adult diabetes, heart disease) and broken marriages, all aggravated by their organizing lifestyle. Rock stars have better mortality.

Coalitions are by their very nature "top down," since each group sends a representative to meetings, where decisions are made and implemented quickly, often to the detriment of the rank and file.
