Thursday, January 30, 7:30 PM Screening: _Camp Arirang_ and _Vieques: An Island Forging Its Future/Un Pueblo Forjando Futuros_

* _CAMP ARIRANG_ (Dir. Grace Yoon Kyung Lee, 1995, 28 mins.)
>From "Hooker Hill" in Seoul to "American Town" near the Kunsan Air
Base, thousands of Korean women have been working as prostitutes for American soldiers since the Korean War. _CAMP ARIRANG_ explores the lives of Korean women employed as "special entertainers" for American GIs, many in conditions tantamount to indentured servitude. Verite and archival footage are combined with interviews of prostitutes, soldiers, and scholars to reveal a disturbing story of Korean and U.S. governments' collusion in the sale and control of women's bodies. Our guide is Yeon Ja Kim, 53, a charismatic ex-prostitute who now devotes her life to the welfare of older prostitutes and their fatherless Amerasian childrenŠ.

* _VIEQUES: An Island Forging Its Future/Un Pueblo Forjando Futuros_ (Dir. Johanna Bermúdez Ruiz, 2001, 17 mins.) _Vieques: An Island Forging Its Futures_ documents the story of a people's struggle against the world's most powerful armed forces: the peaceful resistance movement against the U.S. Navy bombing practices on the Island of Vieques, a sister Island of Puerto Rico, after two bombs negligently killed David Sanes, a Viequense civilian employee, on April 19th, 1999.
