By the way, with last month's employment report, the BLS introduced a new industrial classification system, NAICS, replacing the SIC system, which had its origins in the 1930s. There's now an "information" sector, which includes ISPs and web portals along with traditional things like book publishing. Total employment in the field: 3.3 million, or 2.5% of total employment. That share's unchanged since 1980, and is actually lower than in the 1950s.
