[lbo-talk] Credibility Canyon

It's quite evident right now, just by reading the American corporate press, that the Bush administration is in a serious crisis concerning its justification for war. This is shaping up to be like the situation after the 2000 election, when voting abnormalities which happen in every election, were suddenly noticed and inflated into the crisis of confidence in the voting process. What mystifies me is why the American left hasn't gone on the offensive right now. There seem to be plenty of articles from our side, but we aren't doing a very good job of getting into the public view. Where are the instantaneous protests for impeachment? Where are the smart mobs that use text messaging systems to organize daily targeted protests calling for Bush's resignation?

In other words, when are we going to take the thick padded gloves off and engage in some bare knuckle boxing? Who is going to be the left's Jackie Chan?

As a newshound and a movement/political packrat, I tend to accumulate alot of paper around the apartment, including a stack or two of newspapers. Right now I'm going through one of those projects of going through the papers to snip out interesting articles and protest coverage. One thing this process affords me is an overview of how recent current events were covered before they played themselves out. What strike me in looking at these papers is all the incredible bullshit claims that the Bush adminstration made to justify the invasion of Iraq. Much of the focus has been on the Niger papers, but what about everything else? How many lies did Colin Powell speak at the UN? If it is so hard to find the WMDs now, then doesn't that demolish the argument that the US couldn't wait for inspections to run their course?

It appears to me that the Bush administration could have its credibility run into the ground if we were a bit more aggressive.
