Oracle to double software employees in India
Agence France-Presse New Delhi, July 10
US software giant Oracle Corp's chairman, Larry Ellison, said on Thursday that the company will more than double the number of software engineers it employs in India to more than 6,000 people.
He added that Oracle's Indian arm already has one of the biggest headcounts of software engineers in its worldwide operations, adding that the skill level base for information technology is constantly growing.
"We have around 3,000 software engineers in India. We plan to more than double that in the near term," Ellison told a news conference
India accounts for Oracle's largest research and development centre outside the United States and more than 80 per cent of the employees here are involved in software development work.
Ellison said that while China is becoming an outsourcing hub for goods including information technology hardware, India is going to become a global centre for services.
"We see outsourcing of professional services, not just in software but also in other areas like accounting, moving to India," he added.
Ellison was speaking at a conference webcast from the United States on the occasion of the launch of an e-governance centre at Gurgaon.
The center, set up in partnership with US-based firm Hewlett Packard, can be accessed from anywhere in the world through the Internet, enabling governments worldwide to view e-governance applications.
It will support the e-governance initiatives of central, state and local government bodies in India.
Oracle runs the India Development Centre, India Support Centre and Oracle Solution Services India.
Oracle started its Indian subsidiary, Oracle India Private Ltd, in August 1993.
