Come to think of it, I think trolling around through these archives on Russia at the time of the 1998 crisis shows a good example of how ideology and trying to fit everything into a metanarrative (in this case, "Russia is been destroyed by crony capitalists trying to assimilate it into the world economy and is now in a revolutionary situation -- either revolution in Russian now or the death of the country!") can lead one to make predictions that are totally, completely, wrong.
