[from the National Writers Union]

Last Thursday, on behalf of the NWU, BizTech Co-chair Andreas Ramos hosted a roundtable discussion of SV technical publishing managers regarding the growing threat of the offshoring of technical documentation to India and other countries. Leading tech companies such as Sun, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, PeopleSoft, Bank of America, and others are offshoring entire departments of 150 tech writers and the jobs are being offshored to low-wage countries.

Notes and a summary of the meeting are posted at http://www.andreas.com/techwriteroffshore.html . (Feel free to pass this on, post to other lists, and so on.)

In the next few days, the co-chairs of the NWU BizTech Division will meet to begin to develop a strategy to deal with this. We will also meet with the Bay Area local and the NWU at a national level, along with BAPMF and the STC.

We would appreciate receiving your comments, suggestions, and ideas on this issue.

Sincerely,

Andreas Ramos and Lisa Carlson National Co-Chairs, NWU BizTech Division
