A coalition of extremist leftist parties, almost all of which are known to regularly use antisemitic and racist slogans, announced plans to march on Moscow on September 15-16 to protest globalization, according to the September 14, 2001 issue of Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

The driving force behind the demonstration appears to be Viktor Anpilov's "Working Russia"-a Communist splinter group that often engages in antisemitic rhetoric. They were joined by members of the National Bolshevik Party-a racist, antisemitic radical group whose leader Eduard Limonov is in jail facing charges of terrorism-and the Union of Communist Youth of the KPRF-the Communist Party's youth wing, whose members recently organized an antisemitic demonstration outside the embassy of the Palestinian Authority in Moscow.

Aleksandr Kuvaev, the head of the Moscow branch of the Communist Party, who once vowed to protect the infamous antisemite General Albert Makashov against "Kikes and evil idols," also participated, along with General Makashov's "Movement to Support the Army." However, it does not appear that the Communist Party officially supported the demonstration. "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" added that Russia's leading neo-Nazi rock star Sergey "Spider" Troitsky also planned to give a performance. Organizers promised "non- standard and radical actions" during what they called "the first, unprecedented anti-globalization action in Russia."

The march took place as planned, drawing several hundred participants, many wearing bandanas to cover their faces. Marchers chanted "Death to the bourgeoisie!" "Globalization is fascism!" "The USA is the number #1 terrorist" and "Send a plane into the White House!" Viktor Anpilov praised last week's terrorist attack on the US, saying that it "brought joy to all progressive people, though one feels sorry for the simple people [who died]." He also told the marchers: "You must with your own hands hang in the same alley Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin and Bush!"

At least one policeman was injured during a fight with a protestor and one protestor arrested.

A key leader of the RKRP from its birth, and leader of the mass movement Trudovaya Rossiya (Labour Russia) which it simultaneously set up, was Viktor Anpilov. Early in 1992 Anpilov , who under the old regime had made his career as a journalist and political commentator, became co-secretary of the RKRP. In those days 10 - 30,000 people would gather at rallies of the RKRP's popular movement, Trudovaya Rossiya, in Moscow. Its 15-man executive established in 1992 included many who have remained RKRP leading members till this day, but also those who became founders or key activists of other parties - such as Vladimir Miloserdov, of the deeply antisemitic and ultra-nationalist Russian Party, Viktor Ilyukhin, KPRF deputy who has said that Jews are committing genocide against the Russian people, and Igor Malyarov, leader of the largest Komsomol (communist youth league) in Russia, who recently backed Putin as presidential candidate on the grounds of his "patriotism" , and believes that Russia's destruction of Chechnya was "precisely what modern Russian society needs". (10), (11). Today Anpilov is well-known even outside Russia for his hysterical antisemitic speeches, which are a permanent feature of his meetings and rallies. For example, at a recent conference in Moscow, he declared: 'Against the USSR works "nasty monetary international", but we shall not hide, it is the Jews who have the most part of the monetary capital. There is a world struggle of people for liberation, and the uniform communist party is necessary for this purpose' (12) But this aspect of his politics was also clear during his role as co-leader of the RKRP, when for example, he described Yeltsin's regime on national television as a "Jewish conspiracy". (13) In 1997 Anpilov formed an alliance with the openly nazi National Bolshevik Party of Limonov, then later with the grandson of Josef Stalin, the antisemite Dugashvilli. (14), (15). Another well-known personage of the red-brown scene, General Albert Makashov, was among those elected to the central committee of the RKRP at its foundation (16). Makashov, who was one of the main leaders of the battle to defend the parliament from Yeltsin's troops in 1993, is notorious for his antisemitism. In 1998 he publicly called for the extermination of all Jews in Russia (15). He is admired by neo-nazis around the world, including the Ku Klux Klan (David Duke has travelled to Russia more than once to discuss "co-operation" with him. "Without knowing that we knew nothing, we went on talking without listening to each other. Sometimes we flattered and praised each other, understanding that we would be flattered and praised in return. Other times we abused and shouted at each other, as if we were in a madhouse." -Tolstoy
