I believe goal was the following: willing to die to embarrass Putin and his Chechen policy. In an odd way they achieved their aim.

I doubt we will know really happened for a long time.

What I heard was that they wanted troops out of Chechnya in a week (which is clearly undoable, even if it was a viable option). Haven't heard anything since. Do you have a source?
