Just letting people know that Australia and Britain have taken over law and
order duties in the Solomon Islands. A British commissioner of police was
appointed last month, and today the Australian government agreed to a
request by Sir Alan Kemakeza to send a battalion of Aussie pigs over there.
The Solomon's budget is now almost entirely 'aid,' giving donor countries
(and banks) an astonishing level of control over the country. According to
my anthropologist comrades, there is currently a strike by health sector
workers, over the prospects of layoffs and stringent fiscal policies.
But it's not only colonization that the Pacific Islanders have to worry
about. Some of their islands are just vanishing:
