A rather important difference between now and the Reagan presidency is that during the entire period of Reagan's presidency the Dems controlled the House of Representatives, although in 1981 they were giving him most (not all) of what he wanted. Today we have a House run by Tom (Exterminator) DeLay, who makes even W look almost moderate. There simply is no check now on what Bush wants to do, beyond the Dems having enough in the Senate to filibuster occasionally.
