Within the Democratic Party, Howard Dean will be presented as "the left edge of the just barely electable." Matt Bai writes, "In the space of a few weeks, Dean became the antiwar candidate, the new Gene McCarthy" ("Dr. No and the Yes Men," NYT Magazine, June 1, 2003, <http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/01/magazine/01DEAN.html>) -- the message is that there is _no_ viable political space to the left of Dean in the Democratic Party today and that even the centrist doctor is likely to be just a protest candidate. Kucinich and Sharpton don't appear to have their own political bases large enough to shake up the DP hierarchy (remember, even Jackson, who had a much larger following, couldn't do it); but they don't want to part company with the DP either, terminally marginalized as they are within it.
Outside of the Democratic Party, there is no solid political party that can marshal enough motivated organizers to make a difference in 2004.
Do you have any candidate for whom you don't mind busting your own ass doing campaign work for, say, at least 10-15 hours per week? -- Yoshie
