Somewhat longer answer: Eastern European intelligentsia was a 100% product of the state socialiost educational policies - basically sons of peasants and workers given an opportunity for social climbing that they did not have before. The sons and daughters soon became ashamed of their illiterate peasant and worker parents - they needed a new class identity, and that was conveniently supplied to them by (i) the cultural models of "old" intelligentsia that still lived in memories and (ii) ever-expanding pop culture and the life styles it promoted.
