It's in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (incidentally, one of the funniest books of all time) where HST says something about the casinos being "what the whole hep world would be doing if the Nazis had won the war", or something like that.
But remember, he was describing Las Vegas in 1971 -- a pretty reactionary place. Fortunately, the fine folks at HERE showed up to make the place inhabitable.
