No, really, the gas is released from the front end of the sheep. I vaguely recall seeing somewhere that it is caused by a parasitic bacteria in the stomach, or something like that. (recall that sheep swallow the feed, then regurgitate it and chew it again before sending it on its final journey through the digestive system.) A treament is being developed, which incidentally makes the sheep's digestion far more efficient and thus will save on the amount of feed required to sustain a sheep.
