The resistance in Iraq, mostly anti-occupation w/o intent to restore the old regime, and w/o taint of Ba'athist Party organization or intent to restore the old regime, from what I've picked up from mainstream and alternative press, here, in Europe and the Arab press, is increasing in strength and not just in the Sunni majority zones, but in the Sh'ia south where the Brits recently suffered many casualties.

There were alot of young militants from countries like Lebanon, Syria that went to Iraq in the period before the bombing. Most killed by U.S. firepower, but, quite a few remain, doing classic guerilla warfare and blowing up electrical pylons and such.

On Algeria, btw, see, "The Left and The Algerian Catastrophe, " by Hugh Roberts, Socialist Register, 2003, all articles on, Race, Religion and ethno-nationalism." Roberts has a newish book from Verso on Algerian politics from the late 80's onward. Something like 200,000 have been killed in the civil war of the 90's after the electoral victory of the Islamist FIS was annuled. http://news.google.com/ raqis step up attacks on Allied troops Ireland Online -10 minutes ago British and American forces were on high alert tonight as Iraqis opposed to the US-led occupation stepped up their attacks on Allied troops.
