Japan halts new aid to Myanmar over Suu Kyi's detention
AP
TOKYO: Japan said on Wednesday it has frozen all financial aid to Myanmar, intensifying pressure on the Southeast Asian nation's military government to release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Foreign Ministry official Kojiro Matsumoto said Japan reached its decision after efforts at dialogue with Myanmar officials failed.
"If Suu Kyi was released, Japan would reconsider resuming aid," Matsumoto told The Associated Press.
