Afghan women tune in to first dedicated radio station

Agence France-Presse Kabul, March 8

The first radio station dedicated to Afghan women hit the airwaves on Saturday in a launch timed to coincide with celebrations of International Women's Day.

"The Voice of Afghan Women", broadcast in the local language of Dari, began transmitting its daily selection of programmes focusing on education and practical information.

Five independent women journalists have created the station, led by Jamila Moujahed, a celebrated journalist and the first woman to appear on Afghan television after the fall of the hardline Taliban regime in 2001.

Its studios have been constructed in the heart of Kabul in a media centre operated by the French non-governmental organisation Aina.

The project is jointly funded by Aina and the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organisation UNESCO.
