This is appalling. For months the administration and the media have engaged in an obscene dialogue about the upcoming war, calming discussing the proposed tactics and strategy, the weapons to be used, the number of casualties that will be incurred, and so on, and scarcely anyone cares. "Shock and awe" the Iraqi population? Inflict a virtual Hiroshima on Baghdad? Drop 21,000 lb. "weapons of liberation" on the sufficiently shocked and awed country? Whatever. For such a dialogue to take place publicly requires a population so degraded and so submerged in ideology that it is incapable of exercising any collective moral judgment at all. During WWII Henry Stimson observed that something was wrong with a country that calmly acquiesced to the terror bombings of Germany and Japan. Stimson had it right; there is something wrong with us. We are a nation of savages
