Around 750,000 people have rallied in Barcelona calling for the resignation of their Prime Minister and US ally, Jose Maria Aznar. Up to 200,000 people have marched in London, the numbers down on the huge crowds seen at the last major peace rally.
An estimated 90,000 strong crowd marched through the streets of Paris.
In the United States, tens of thousands of demonstrators marched from Broadway to Washington Square in New York, with several dozen people later arrested after they refused to go home.
Other major rallies were held in Montreal, Rome, Washington and other major cities in the Middle East and Asia.
