NACLA Seeks Editor

The North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) seeks a senior editor to coordinate all aspects of publishing our bimonthly journal, NACLA Report on the Americas.

The editor: Coordinates the editing of all sections of the magazine: This includes working closely with the associate editor, other staff members and the editorial board in conceiving of report and article topics, commissioning pieces, working with authors, copy editing, fact checking and proofreading. Assigns, edits and occasionally writes pieces for all sections of the Report. Coordinates the work of the staff in finding and obtaining all photographs and other graphic material to be used in each issue. Works with the production manager in layout and design. Works with the director and circulation manager on questions of circulation, promotion and development. Writes or delegates the writing of the "Taking Note" editorial column as well as the introduction to each report.

Required Qualifications: Extensive professional editorial and copy-editing experience. Compatability with the goals and perspectives of NACLA. Knowledge of Latin America and U.S. foreign policy. Fluency in Spanishtranslation is part of the job. Excellent writing skills. Ability to work on deadline. Capacity to work well in a team, but without close supervision. Familiarity with journalists and academics writing about Latin America. Excellent interpersonal skills as position demands extensive collaboration with staff, interns and writers.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in Portuguese. Advanced academic training in Latin American studies or related field. Experience living and working in Latin America. Expertise in computer systems and Web management/design. Familiarity with NACLA, its mission and political perspective.

Salary: Mid-$30,000s, depending on experience. Excellent benefits, work environment. Tentative start date: June 15th or negotiable. Minimum two-year commitment.
