Kristol seems to be right here on the specific point, but he's missing the
larger point: if there were no WMDs, the entire rationale of pre-emptive
war was fraudulent. Wolfowitz, under Tannenbaum's reconstruction, was at
least offering an alternative justification, and one that most people
would agree was a good thing. Take that away, as Billy Kristol is doing,
and the war has no justification at all. That's not exactly an
ideological improvement.
