Israeli motorists are waiting in long lines at petrol stations as trade unions halted fuel supplies ahead of a general strike aimed at paralysing the whole economy. Israel's cabinet approved the issuing of emergency back-to-work orders to keep essential services running should last-minute negotiations with the main trade union fail. The union, Histadrut, called the strike in protest over pension reform and government plans for layoffs. A spokesman says the general strike will start later today and there will be no public transport, airports will be shut, and there will be stoppages in the supply of electricity and water.
