To ordinary citizens, it's by no means obvious that the Matrix, a.k.a. neoliberalism, is a system of ruthless extraction and therefore their class enemy. They can't see the thing, can't touch it, taste it, or paint it with magic markers. The reality of unequal exchange is vastly complicated, messy and contradictory, because some unequal exchanges cancel each other other (e.g. China's boom): there is an ironic truth in neoliberalism's untruth. The point isn't to blame the rest of the global periphery for not being China, the point is to analyze why China is leaving the periphery, and how this might relate to a global resistance project.
