Then there the unpleasant historical associations (the
Lubyanka,  Kolyma, Kromdstadt, Katin Forest, the Pact,
etc.) of red flags and old beareded German emigres
that many on the left -- myself among them -- choose
not to associate with the traditions with which they
identify . . .
