We've just elected a social democratic mayor in Toronto. The we is 285,000 many of whom were strategic voting (there was another similar candidate who at the beginning of the campaign was polling well ahead of the candidate who eventually won). If the split had remained, the candidate pursuing the Karl Rove strategy would have won (he ended up with 250,000 votes).
