I've meet David Cobb several times. He's smart, capable, and I respect him. He is neither a self-destructive crank nor an egomaniac, which can be seen from his statements to Sifry. He is, and this likely means different things to different list members, very much influenced by David Korton.
And I keep bringing up the ballot access because I don't know that the party can duplicate it's successes from last time around (gaining access in 45+ states). This takes time and bodies (or money, if you've got it).
Getting access seems a half-way decent barometer of the party's organizing; retaining it is another matter...
