I think both "Another World is possible" and "Workers
of the world, unite!" are both good slogans. It is
true that the first slogan does not make any concrete
proposals, I think the so-called anti-globalization
movement wants to distance itself from capitalism and
the failed socialist experiments of the 20th century.
We need some hope that there is another way, a better
way. It is a slogan that breaks with the hierarchical
models of the Left in which ONE way, ONE solution is
put forward by a handful of vanguardists. It is a
slogan that suggests the end of cynicism and the
beginning of hope and possibilities.
"Workers of the World, Unite" is also a good slogan
for many of the reasons that Yoshie suggests. It is
perhaps MORE important now than it was 150 years ago.
The global economy will, like it or not, entrain
chauvinism between workers of various countries and it
is important to keep the idea expressed by this slogan
fresh in our minds: dont give capitalism a respite in
any part of the globe.
