Dear friends,

A few weeks ago the Cornell ILR School organized a labor leaders reception in Manhattan for Lula, the President of Brazil. As many of you know, Lula is a former trade union organizer and leader. He was elected President a year or so ago with 61% of the vote.

We are pleased to make available to you a transcript of Lula's 40-minute speech, with accompanying photographs. In his comments, the President made several references to the support made available to him by U.S. trade unionists throughout his political career. Lula also presented aspects of his vision for Brazil and the country's role in the struggle for global justice.

In solidarity,

Sean Sweeney Director of Labor Studies
