Chinese authorities arrest Nepalese rebels

AP WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2003 01:50:55 PM

KATHMANDU: Authorities in China arrested four suspected Nepalese rebels in a border town and confiscated guns and explosives the insurgents were allegedly planning to smuggle into Nepal, a news report said on Wednesday.

State-run Radio Nepal reported the four Maoist rebels were getting ready to sneak the weapons into Nepal when the Chinese authorities at Khasa, a town on the Tibetan side of the border, arrested them.

The report cited Nepalese officials as saying the four had been detained three weeks ago, and were being held for questioning in the Tibetan town of Xigatse. It did not give further details.

Police say weapons are being routinely smuggled from China and that most of the weapons used by the rebels for political assassinations have been Chinese-made guns. China has denied that any illegal activity goes on at the border.
