Latvia: Chill Winds from Moscow and Brussels
Brussels protects Latvia from Russian pressure, but reacts frostily after 
Riga silences Latvian critic of its Russian-minority policy.

RIGA, Latvia--Latvia is going through a crash course in European Union-style 
democratic politics.

On one side, Brussels is staunchly taking Riga's side in the face of a 
revival of Russia's regular charges regarding discrimination against the 
Russian-speaking minority.

At the same time Riga is being given a lesson in democracy by the European 
Parliament (EP) over pro-Russia statements by a outspoken left-wing Latvian 
observer to the EP.
