JOEL KOVEL TALKS ON LATIN AMERICA DEC. 7
HIGHLAND Author and Bard Professor Joel Kovel will discuss relations between the United States and the Latin America/Caribbean region within the context of the Bush administration's "war on terrorism" in a public meeting here Sunday Dec. 7.
The talk titled, "Can Latin America Move Beyond the Washington Consensus?" will describe how Latin America seems to be leading the way against Washington's quest for greater hegemony in the world. He will focus on new progressive governments in Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia, the difficulties the U.S. is encountering in its efforts to develop a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and the evident spread of antipathy to Uncle Sam surging throughout the region, among other topics.
Kovel, a professor of social studies, has lectured extensively in the Hudson Valley and throughout the country. He was the New York State Green Party candidate for U.S. Senator in 1998. His latest book, "The Enemy of Nature," was published last year by Zed Books.
The event is sponsored by the New Paltz-based Caribbean and Latin America Support Project (CLASP), as part of its monthly series of public discussions that have been continuing since the 1980s. It starts at 7 p.m. sharp at the Boughton Place meeting hall in Highland, 150 Kisor Rd., just south of Rt. 299 midway between Rt. 9W and New Paltz thruway exit 18. A potluck dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Admission free, all invited. Information and directions, (845) 691-8289 or jacdon at earthlink.net.
