Oh, and googling around, was reminded of a very good autobiography I read in college, Kleinberg, Seymour Alienated affections; being gay in America, the first chapter being his acct. of being closeted when in the Young Communist League.

As I'm sure most on this thread know, founder of the Mattachine Society, Harry Hay (lover in the 30's was Will Geer) was in the CPUSA.
