[lbo-talk] Brad DeLong: Krugman's getting the Nobel

I actually do stochastic time series analysis for my job (which you are free to ask about!) so I know who Engle and Granger are. They basically said that two variables that are random (are be made to be random by removing the non-random aspects by regression techniques) can and do have correlations that make standard techniques inaccurate. SO, they developed better techniques to deal with two variable interactions over time (by co-integrating them). Luckily, I mostly work in single variable time series and can use more practical and simpler techniques.

Personally, I think the Hodrick-Prescott filter is WAYYYY cooler.

[I apologize that my email program sends in an encoding that our list manager's digest software cannot handle but it is NOT MY FAULT. In fact, you should all empathize with my plight by having to be FORCED to use MS Outlook Webmail by my employer--the only option to use this account for UMass Med workers who work in state agencies off-campus. I could wait to post from home but experience tells me I would never post then. I will make an effort though as I have a bunch to say about US health policy.

I work in Boston as the house health economist for the state medicaid agency. Unlike academic economists-like that font of misinformation Brad Delong--I actually have to be forecast accurately once in a while to keep my job.]

Here it is: it's going jointly to Robert F. Engle,

an American and Clive Granger, a Brit.

Anybody have any more info on these guys?
