I wouldn't argue w/ 99% of contemporary country being crap (or what is called soul these days) but, some of these are so-called alt counbtry, Hank, Cash, Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, The Flatlanders, Butch Hancock, Palace Brothers, Pernice Brothers, Freakwater, Uncle Tupelo, Flying Burrito Brothers/Gram Parsons, The Byrds in their country period, Townes Van Zandt, The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, Lambchop, are all great.
