It's relevant because democracy and, for Treanor, human rights are two examples of the baggage that often gets dumped (other times it's equality) by those who call to transcend left and right. You want to move beyond such "static" categories, and it looks like we've found what you want to escape. It's one thing to criticize how provisional such labels can be; it's another to reject the most basic convictions -- which is where the sucker-punch comes in.
