I am not sure I agree that sports can replace a passion for politics. I love sports and movies and jazz, but none of that replaces my desire for social change. To me they compliment each other.
As far as ebb and flow go, isn't that the nature of life and social change? Sports could be seen as a good instruction in the reality of how life and change occur -- in fits and starts.
The claim just seems dubious to me.
